How to use

Calculate your GPA

  1. Choose From grades if you have a grade sheet, or From marks if you only have marks.
  2. From grades: add one row for every line of the grade sheet, theory and internal lines included, with its credit hours and grade.
  3. From marks: add one row for each subject with its total credit hours, the theory marks and full marks, and the internal or practical marks and full marks if the subject has them.
  4. The GPA appears below. The names of the subjects are only for your own reference.

The formula is the total of credit hours multiplied by grade point, divided by the total credit hours. Your result is not stored or sent anywhere.

Final grade

How the final grade of a subject is decided

Theory and internal (or practical) marks are graded separately. Each grade point is multiplied by its share of the subject's credit hours, the two are added, and the total is divided by the subject's credit hours. That average gives the final grade:

Average grade point of the subjectFinal grade
3.61 to 4.0A+
3.21 to 3.6A
2.81 to 3.2B+
2.41 to 2.8B
2.01 to 2.4C+
1.61 to 2.0C
1.6D
Below 1.6NG

A subject is Not Graded when theory is below 35% or internal is below 40%. Source: Letter Grading System handbook (2079), Curriculum Development Centre. In the From marks tab the credit hours of a subject are shared between theory and internal in proportion to their full marks, as in the handbook's example.

Common questions

Questions about GPA and grades

How is GPA calculated in Nepal's school grading system?

Each subject, or each theory and internal part of a subject, has credit hours and a grade point. Multiply the credit hours by the grade point to get the weighted grade point, add these up for all subjects, and divide by the total credit hours. The result, to two decimal places, is the GPA.

What are the grades and grade points for SEE and Class 11 and 12?

The Letter Grading Directive, 2078 uses eight levels for Classes 1 to 12: A+ is 90% and above with 4.0, A is 80 to below 90 with 3.6, B+ is 70 to below 80 with 3.2, B is 60 to below 70 with 2.8, C+ is 50 to below 60 with 2.4, C is 40 to below 50 with 2.0, D is 35 to below 40 with 1.6, and NG, Not Graded, is below 35.

What does NG mean on a grade sheet?

NG means Not Graded. A subject is NG when the theory marks are below 35% or the internal or practical marks are below 40%. A grade sheet with a GPA is issued only when every subject has at least a D in theory and a C in internal, so an NG has to be cleared first, through the grade improvement exam where the rules allow it.

Where do I find the credit hours of my subjects?

They are printed beside each subject on your grade sheet and in the curriculum for your class. Theory and internal parts usually have their own credit hours. Enter them as printed. If you only know the total for a subject, use the From marks tab and the calculator shares the credit hours between theory and internal in proportion to their full marks.

Why can the final grade of a subject differ from the grade for the total marks?

Theory and internal marks are graded separately. Each gets its own grade point, the two are averaged by credit hours, and that average decides the final grade. So 43 out of 50 in theory and 36 out of 50 in internal gives grade points 3.6 and 3.2, an average of 3.4, which is an A, even though the total is 79%.

How do I convert GPA to percentage?

There is no official formula for turning a GPA back into a percentage. Grade points come from ranges of marks, so a GPA only tells you the range you were in. For example, a GPA of 3.6 means your results sit around the A level, which is 80% to below 90%. If an institution asks for a percentage, use the conversion it publishes.

Is the old SEE grading with D+ and E still used?

The directive keeps an older nine-level scale, with D+, D and E, only for SEE examinations taken under the curriculum before the National Curriculum Framework, 2076. This calculator uses the current eight-level scale.
