About this tool

How Romanized Nepali typing works

You write the sound of the word and the tool builds the Nepali letters. A consonant followed by a vowel takes that vowel's sign, so ki is कि and kaa is का. Two consonants in a row join, so namaste gives नमस्ते. A full stop becomes the Nepali danda (।).

Use a double vowel for the long sound: aa for आ, ee for ई and oo for ऊ. If a word comes out joined when you wanted separate letters, put an a between them: sagaramaathaa gives सगरमाथा.

Typing with Preeti keys

If you learned to type Nepali on the Preeti font, the traditional layout, press Preeti keys and type exactly as you always have. Your keystrokes become Unicode as you type, so there is no need to convert afterwards.

Common questions

How do I type Nepali without a Nepali keyboard?

Type the word the way it sounds using English letters. For example, namaste becomes नमस्ते and nepaal becomes नेपाल. Then copy the Nepali text and paste it wherever you need it.

How do I type half letters and joined letters?

Type the consonants one after another with no vowel between them. For example, s followed by t gives स्त, and ksh gives क्ष. To force a half letter at the end of a word, add ^ after it.

How do I type ट, ठ, ड, ढ and ण?

Use capital letters: T, Th, D, Dh and N. Small t, th, d, dh and n give त, थ, द, ध and न.

How do I type chandrabindu and anusvara?

Type * or ~ for chandrabindu (ँ) and capital M for the dot above (ं). For example, kaaThamaaDauM gives काठमाडौं.

Is my text saved or uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.

Can I type with the traditional Preeti layout?

Yes. Press Preeti keys (traditional) above the box and type as you would in the Preeti font. The Unicode text appears beside it as you type.
