About this calendar

How the dates and tithi are worked out

Bikram Sambat dates. The Nepali year starts in mid April and its months have 29 to 32 days, set year by year. This calendar uses a table of month lengths for 1975 to 2099 BS, the same one behind my Nepali date converter.

Tithi. A tithi is a lunar day: the time the Moon takes to move 12 degrees ahead of the Sun. There are 30 in a lunar month, 15 in the bright half (Shukla Paksha) ending in Purnima and 15 in the dark half (Krishna Paksha) ending in Aunsi. The tithi shown for a day is the one in force at sunrise in Kathmandu, calculated from the positions of the Sun and Moon.

Please check before fixing a date. The tithi here is calculated, not copied from a printed patro, so on days when a tithi changes close to sunrise it can differ by one from the official panchanga. Festivals also follow their own rules (some go by the tithi at night or in the afternoon). For rituals, use the date announced by the Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Samiti.
