How to use

Take the typing test

  1. Choose the language and layout, then the length of the test.
  2. Click the box and type the highlighted word. Press space to move to the next word. The timer starts with your first key.
  3. When the time is up you get your speed in words per minute, your accuracy and the words you got wrong.

A wrong word stays wrong, as it would in an exam, so slow down a little if the red words pile up.

Nepali Unicode

Use the Nepali keyboard on your own computer, either Romanized or traditional. If you have not set one up, the Nepali Unicode typing tool lets you type Nepali with English letters.

Nepali, Preeti keys

Type on a normal English keyboard using the Preeti key positions. You do not need the Preeti font: the page reads your keys as Nepali and shows the keys for each word until you know them. To turn old Preeti text into Unicode, use the Preeti to Unicode converter.

Preparing for an exam

Practise the way you will be tested

Typing tests for office and government posts in Nepal usually name the language, the layout and a minimum speed. Read the vacancy notice or syllabus for those three things, then practise here with the same language and layout and a timer close to the real one.

Accuracy matters as much as speed, because wrong words are taken off your score. A steady pace with few mistakes beats a fast run full of red words.

Common questions

Questions about the typing test

How is my typing speed calculated?

Speed is the number of words you typed correctly divided by the minutes you typed, shown as words per minute (WPM). A word counts only when every letter and mark in it is right. Accuracy is correct words out of all the words you typed.

Do I need the Preeti font or a Nepali keyboard installed?

Not for Preeti practice. Choose Nepali, Preeti keys and type on a normal English keyboard exactly as you would in Preeti. The page turns your keys into Nepali and checks them. For Nepali Unicode, use the Nepali keyboard already set up on your computer or phone, Romanized or traditional.

Which keys do I press for a Nepali word in Preeti?

In Preeti mode the test shows the keys for the word you are on, just under the passage. You can switch that hint off when you no longer need it.

What typing speed do I need for a job or an exam?

It depends on the post. The required speed and the layout are written in the vacancy notice or the exam syllabus, so check that first, then practise here with the same language and layout until you pass it comfortably.

Can I practise English typing too?

Yes. Choose English at the top. The timer, speed and accuracy work the same way.

Does it work on a phone?

It works, but a typing test is meant for a physical keyboard. Phone results will not match what you can do on a computer.

How can I type faster in Nepali?

Keep your eyes on the passage, not on the keyboard. Practise for ten to fifteen minutes every day, aim for accuracy first and let the speed follow. Repeat the words you got wrong, which the result shows you after each test.

Is my typing saved or sent anywhere?

No. Everything runs in your browser. Only your best score is remembered, and only on your own device.
