YaadRestore AI: Old-Photo Restoration That Never Uploads Your Photos

A web app that restores old family photos entirely in the visitor's browser. It repairs fading, dust and scratches, restores faces, fills larger tears, and can add colour, without the photo ever leaving the device.

01 · Why build it

Family photos should not have to leave the house.

Most photo restoration services ask you to upload your photos to someone else's server. For family photos, many people would rather not. YaadRestore runs the AI models inside the browser instead.

Workflow
03 · Privacy by design

The browser does the work.

ProcessingModels run with ONNX Runtime Web in a background worker, so the page stays responsive.
HardwareUses the graphics card through WebGPU when available, and falls back to the processor through WebAssembly.
NetworkThe site's security policy only allows connections back to the site itself.
OfflineInstallable as an app; works offline once the models have been downloaded.
04 · Lessons

What running AI in a browser teaches you.

01
Plan for the slowest device.

A processor fallback means the app works everywhere, just more slowly.

02
Keep the original.

Colour is added to a separate copy, because colourisation is a guess, not a restoration.

03
Privacy is an architecture decision.

Not uploading photos is simpler to promise when there is no server to upload to.
